How David Haydn-Jones & Jazzercise Promotes Alzheimer’s Awareness
Hello all you Geek Enthusiasts and Nerd Aficionados!
Happy Sunday to all of you. I’m coming to you to talk to you about something going on this month you may not be aware of. November is officially Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. It’s ok if you forgot, it’s not something a lot of us think about on a day to day basis. For some though, its something they are forced to live with every single day. And I can tell you, after the things I was invited to do and participate in this month I will never be forgetting again what this month represents to millions of people. David Haydn-Jones took us all on a wild ride and we couldn’t be more grateful.
For those of you who follow the Supernatural fandom, you know one of it’s cast members ran a charity campaign to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America. It was a labor of love between David and his fans, with lots of #LTTU love to be spread. Going back and looking over Twitter from the past month, it was clear how many people were drawing inspiration from what David was doing. I know it doesn’t seem like a big deal filming a jazzercise class, but it was to his fans. He made us feel included and valued, and for some who may struggle with self-esteem issues it’s something that you cannot put a price on.
So back in October I was lucky enough to be selected to participate in a special editing project. It was beyond thrilling to be selected, considering I am usually never around when the cool stuff is happening. Right place right time and bam! I am sucked into a world of Jazzercise, 80s power ballads, and anxious fans on twitter rabid for videos. Luckily I wasn’t alone in the madness, joined by the lovely
I gotta admit, I have never shared any of the videos I have ever made in the past, as they have all only been submitted as a GISHWHES item. So it was nice to have a support system to reassure that I didn’t completely suck. It totally made it all worth it when all 4 of us had 80s power ballads on repeat in our heads all day every day. I hope the people who listen to calls for quality at my work enjoyed my rendition of the Power of Love that got recorded on quite a few calls. Hopefully it spiced up their days, it certainly did mine.
David Haydn-Jones went above and beyond to deliver on his promise of Jazzercise to his fans. Just like with everything else he does he embraced it with a whole heart and the result was amazing. Honestly I was expecting a cheesy 30-60 min. video shot by a friend on a camera phone. This though, what he did, was so far above what any of us were expecting. But no, he flies to Ohio, attends a class, films it all, and has a blast doing it is phenomenal. Everyone looked like they were having ball, even as they worked up a serious sweat.
Seeing something like this is a reminder to just cut loose and enjoy life. Especially when life right now seems so out of control, this is a great reminder to snag joy wherever you can find it. So thanks to my other 3 editors, and to David Haydn-Jones for making this whole experience great. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as we did.
