20th Century Fox cast it’s first New Mutants

Good Day to all the Geek Enthusiasts and Nerd Aficionados!

Fox studios has a strangle hold on Marvel’s Merry Mutant (The X-Men) film rights. The film rights will stay theirs, as long as they keep on pumping out films starring characters from the mutant filled comics. After the box office success they’ve had with Deadpool and Logan, it’s highly unlikely that grip is going to loosen any time soon. They have many mutant projects in the pipeline. First of which being New MutantsTHR broke the news of our first two cast members for the team.

New Mutants

First a little about the New Mutants. The New Mutants were Professor Xavier’s second team after the X-Men. They were not meant to be a team going out and fighting against evil. Instead they were a group of younger mutants, and their sole purpose at the school was to learn how to handle their mutant powers. The original X-Men had moved beyond being just students at Xaviers School for the Gifted, they were a full fledged fighting team.

When the New Mutants came on to the comic book stands. It told a story of students that were trying to learn and cope with their powers. They were not allowed to fight outside of the school as a team. Their curriculum consisted of training within the school to get a better understanding of themselves and their powers. Of course these are comic books, so some situation always came up where they did end up fighting some menace in one way or another.

The stories within their comic got a little deeper then the original X-Men comics. Focusing more on things that teenagers dealt with in real life. Struggles within themselves, doubts, and self loathing. Not thinking that they are good enough to those around them. Lashing out at elders, as well as death and loss. Though the original characters were never quite as popular as their older counter-parts, at times their stories were far superior.

Featured in many of her different outfit renditions

Rahne Sinclair was a girl who grew up in a small Scottish town. Her mutant power was to transition into a wolf-human hybrid, or a full on wolf. She was an orphan raised by a reverend that constantly pushed religion on her. When her mutant power manifested, it was assumed she had been possessed or was a witch herself. The townspeople rallied to burn her at the stake. Getting away from that awful scenario, as a result it still carried mental scars of the ordeal. Always feeling that there was something wrong with her, and that because of her appearance nobody would ever be attracted to her. She was also stuck having polar opposites in personality. When in human form she was a shy girl, whilst in her wolf form extremely feral and violent. She had to learn to control the blood lust while in wolf form. GoT_Maisie_Williams

Maisie Williams, known for her role as Arya Stark, has been cast into the role of Rahne Sinclair (Wolfsbane.) From a young age on Game of Thrones, Maisie has proven she has the acting chops to take on some of the serious things that Rahne has to deal with.

Illyana Nikolievna Rasputina is the sister of Pyotr Nikolayevich Rasputin, better known as Colossus. Illyana is Pyotr younger sister by many years. Within the comics she gets abducted by a character by the name of Belasco, and taken into a dimension known as limbo.

Belasco raises her. He mentally tortures and corrupts her to be evil, therefore upon complete corruption he will be able to escape the Limbo dimension. She is rescued by an alternate version of Storm that teaches her sorcery in the ways of white magic. Belasco get’s her back and teaches her black magic to further corrupt her. In the mix she becomes the ruler of limbo, almost being evil but able to control it. Her mutant power is the ability to create teleportation discs, using them to return home. Where she ends up being about 7 years older due to no time having passed. Due to the years in Limbo she constantly battles with good vs evil within herself, while feeling that someday she’ll lose.Split_Anya_Taylor_Joy

Anya Taylor-Joy is playing Illyana (Magik). The one film I’ve seen her in draws close parallels to Illyana. Split by M. Night Shyamalan. Her character is abducted, dealing with the mental torture of an abductor with split personalities. She may not have shown how she can do with the battling with good vs bad. She has shown she knows how to be that girl that starts out as a damsel and found the will to empower herself to beat her captor.

Waiting on the rest

There will be more news to come on who will be playing the rest of the team. If there’s any indication after these two castings, it looks like we are going to have a strong group of young actors to start this new potential tent pole franchise for Fox. Plus, if it ever crosses over with the current batch of X-Men movies we can get a mini Game of Thrones reunion in the ways of Sophie Turner, who plays Jean Grey, and Maisie Williams. Both of which play the Stark sisters Sansa and Arya.

If you have any thoughts about the casting choices let us know in the comments below or on anyone one of our many social network platforms. Who do you think should be cast in the last remaining members Sunspot, Moonstar, and Cannonball?
