Good Day to all the Geek Enthusiasts and Nerd Aficionados!
For all the video game fans of the Uncharted series, Rejoice, Rejoice!!! We have finally gotten our Nathan Drake, but is it good news? Well, I’ll give you my thoughts and then I’ll let you make your own decision. Feel free to discuss in the comment section below. So, let’s get to it.
Uncharted has been stuck in development limbo for what seems like forever. It has been announced that it has a different director attached more times than Nathan Drake finds treasure items just lying around. The original game came out in 2007, and it was a masterpiece.
I myself didn’t have a Playstation 3 the gaming platform it came out for, but I had to play it. So, I went to the now extinct, except in Alaska, Blockbuster Video. Then, I rented the game and went to my best friends house to play it on his console. I now had 3 days to play it before having to pay late fees, but I also had a job. So, I slept on his coach for two nights to get the game played. The third night, I didn’t sleep because there was no way in hell I wasn’t finishing this epic game. Epic it was and it was by far one of my favorite games that I had ever played. Every subsequent sequel after it got better and better. The mythos of Nathan Drake was born.
Of course, whenever a video game series is amazing with great story elements, the next progression is film. But ,after all the junk that has come out in movie form for video games, Naughty Dog wasn’t about to let their IP just be butchered. Hence, the development limbo.
Many actors have been talked about to play the role of Nathan Drake. For those that have never played the games and don’t know who Nathan is, I have to make a quick suggestion. Get online or go to the store and pick up the Uncharted games right now and play them. If you’re a fan of story driven games, then you will thank me.
Nathan is a treasure hunter that is brought to life beautifully by the voice acting of Nolan North. Essentially, North is Drake just like Kevin Conroy is Batman. Unfortunately, voice actors do not get enough credit or the opportunity to bring the characters to life on the big screen. The closest comparison you can give Drake to an already established character is Indiana Jones. But, they are only similar because he’s a fortune seeker that gets mixed up into bigger things. Nathan is more charismatic with a better sense of humor. He generally makes too much light of things.
Casting choice’s for Nathan
As has been stated many times in this article, Uncharted has been in development hell for the better part of a decade. With that comes the will they/won’t they of possible casting choices. The one that got the biggest head of steam from fans was to cast Nathan Fillion as Drake. Fillion fit all the proper molds. Charisma? Check. Rugged good looks? Check. Sense of humor? Check. Fillion was for all intensive purposes Nathan Drake. Alas, it didn’t happen due to being too old for a tent poll franchise in Hollywood’s opinion.
The only actor that had officially been cast, until now, was Mark Wahlburg. But, I am so glad this didn’t come to fruition, as I fear it would have been Tomb Raider all over again. Casting a big name thinking it would drive in more dollars, but losing the chance to make a proper rendition in the first place.
Nathan Drake has been cast
Now, with the movie being out of development hell and actually being made, we get our casting for who will be playing Nathan Drake. Tom Holland, who is currently playing Peter Parker/Spiderman in the upcoming Spiderman: Homecoming has been cast. Am I happy with this casting? Not in the slightest.
I think the casting directors may have lost their minds. However, we have to look at this from all angles. Charisma? Check. Rugged good looks? Nope (He’s too smooth faced.), Sense of humor? Check (A prerequisite to play Spidey well, which he has). So, two out of three isn’t bad. Couple this with the fact that it will be a prequel and he will be playing a young Drake. I’m assuming This will be in an almost Young Indiana Jones kind of way. Consequently, this gives it even more promise. I will have to do the wait and see approach. Rest assured, there will be hell raised if they finally get the film done and it is an utter pile.
More cast to come
This is where they can really flesh it out the movie properly. Depending on the characters in film, seeing as it’s young Nathan Drake, I’m sure we will get Sully and Sam, Nathan’s big brother. If they flop these castings then there may be no hope.
What are your thoughts on the choice? Do you think Tom Holland will pull it off? Who should they cast as Sully and Sam? What impression has the Uncharted franchise left on you?
