How to make your own Harry Potter Bath Bomb

Magical Sorting Bath Bomb

Don’t know what magical house you belong to? Take a bath. These “sorting” bath bomb will take the guesswork out of choosing and give you soft clean skin at the same time. The color is on the inside and as it dissolves into your bath the color will be revealed and you will see what house you are in.

For the Inside

1/2 cup baking soda
¼ cup corn starch
¼ cup Epsom salt
1/4 cup citric acid
4 colors of food or soap coloring
3-4 tsps. Of coconut oil
1-2 tsp water
Round flexible mold (optional)

For the Outside

1/2 cup baking soda
¼ cup corn starch
¼ cup Epsom salt
1/4 cup citric acid
3-4 tsps. Of coconut oil
1-2 tsp water
1 tsp. essential oil
Round flexible mold (optional)

Directions for Inside/Middle

Combine all dry ingredients in a bowl. Stir together until just combined. Add coconut oil. Stir until ingredients are thoroughly combined. Add water S L O W L Y and only as much to make the dry mixture a bit easier to shape into balls too much water too fast and it will fizz too much. Separate into portions for each house and add the food coloring to each portion. Remember for colors it is green, yellow, blue, and red. You could add a bit of safe body art glitter, (NOT METAL), to it in red=gold, blue=bronze, green=silver, and yellow=black

When the mixture is wet enough to stick together, shape by hand into small balls. Set bath bombs on parchment paper or a paper towel and let them dry for 24 hours.

Directions for Outside

The method is the same with the inside layer except this layer does not have food coloring mixed in. You can add more safe body art quality, (NOT METAL), glitter into the mix. White or diamond dust colored glitter works well here. Remember to add a bit of essential oil to your mixture for a smelling good bath.

When the mixture is ready, either make a well in your round molds, insert the colored bombs and cover, making sure the excess mixture is scraped from the outside of the mold, or shape the bombs by hand. Let dry for 24 hours before letting your victim, er… student pick one.

Notes

  • Stay away from oils that people are allergic to. Also there are some essential oils that can burn in greater quantities like clove or cinnamon. You can use a bath bomb mold, but shaping the ball with your hands is a great idea.
  • Using food color paste that you find in baking supply stores will give a more intense color. But they might colors the skin as well, use at your peril.
  • Mixing dried flowers into your mixture won’t affect the consistency of the bath bomb, and they will make the bath water pretty.
  • Adding items like lavender, rose petals, chamomile, oatmeal and green tea leaves, can make the bath a “spa” experience. Inserting a small toy, (non-choking toy) can be a surprise for kids.
  • Remember, just because you got a color for a house you don’t want doesn’t mean you have be a part of that group. The Sorting Hat has the final say.
