New GOT Trailer Released
The Winter Trailer You Need to Beat This Heat
Nothing like a new icy GOT trailer to beat the ridiculous heat on the first day of Summer. In Southern California though that day is a joke as we often get summer temps in March. But Seriously, this trailer gave me chills. I had to watch it around 5 times just to comprehend every detail it was serving up. So let’s break it down.
HBO released its second trailer for Season 7 of the fantasy series “Game of Thrones” on Wednesday morning, and boy is it just overflowing with fire, ice, and spears. It starts off with Sansa Stark striding through the snow with a Littlefinger voice-over. A warning from the esteemed chessmaster (to who we don’t know but the assumption is he’s talking to Sansa) “Don’t fight in the North. Or the South. Fight every battle, everywhere, always, in your mind.” It seems an accurate quote, as all of Westeros is poised on the brink of war.
The slow opening doesn’t stay slow. It jumps to the gates of Castle Black to allow Bran and Meera entry in. It then cuts to Jon, dressed in his wildling gear, so he appears to be beyond the wall. He appears to be primarily there throughout this trailer. Off to Kings Landing we go.
Goldcloaks march through the streets of King’s Landing to a weirdly happy crowd. As we know from casting, Euron Greyjoy is set to be a player in his new alliance with Cersei. This scene could be Euron as he makes his entrance to King’s Landing before the battle with Dany begins. Ships bearing the Kraken of House Greyjoy sail toward King’s Landing. Chances are these are Euron’s ships.
We travel over to the shores of Dragonstone which is showing us some new arrivals. It’s hard to tell who it is for sure. There’s been set pictures of both Jon Snow and his retinue and the surprise return of Gendry landing on these beaches. I for one am excited to see what the hell Gendry has been up to the past few years. For all we know it is Dany and her retinue arriving.
We do know she has arrived at Dragonstone at some point, as we see her walking the cliffs there. She is destroying the Baratheon tapestries as she sets up shop in her homeland. All this is happening while Jon Snow speaks over the scene: “For centuries our families fought together, against their common enemy. Despite their differences, together. We need to do the same if we’re gonna survive.”
What or who Jon is speaking to is unknown. It could be the houses of the North, it could be the Wildlings or both. Seems unlikely that this is what he says when he eventually does meet up with Dany. I don’t see him using the loyalty of houses that betrayed her family as a way to form an alliance. We then get a shot of the dragons flying their way over to the Dragonstone apparently with Tyrion looking on.
Next we get a shot of Grey Worm sailing off to what does not appear to be Dragonstone. Call me an over-analyzer but the rocks don’t match. They appear to be sailing towards a crevice in a rock. Exciting no? Well it could be, if it matches up with the rumors that Dany’s Unsullied attack Casterly Rock. Which as we know is the ancestral home of House Lannister. If this is true it will be the first time it has appeared in the series. If anyone knows how to infiltrate Casterly Rock it is Tyrion Lannister. Perhaps he can finally make use of his knowledge of the drainage system there as a way to sneak inside. If this is indeed the case I look forward to seeing what they do with this situation.
Back to the North
We head back up to the North and the Wildlings. We See Brienne and Pod somewhere in the North. I am honestly not sure where as I can’t place the background. We also see a return of Sandor Clegane, dressed in the furs of a wildling. He appears in a scene that involves a skirmish between the forces of Jaime Lannister and Dany’s forces. So perhaps he is part of Jon’s retinue that he takes beyond the wall??? So many questions.
A swarm of ravens flies over a huge crowd of wildlings… and gets the attention of the Night’s King himself. The trailer seems to show him cutting Bran’s connections to the ravens. However, all that is forgotten when you see that Bran is in a freaking wheelchair. Sitting in a wheelchair in front of a weirwood tree. It appears to be the tree Night’s Watch inductees took their oaths in front of. This should take place after Bran’s arrival at Castle Black. No clue who he is with though. I can’t place the balding head of the Night’s Watch guy.
Guess Who’s Back? Back Again?
Beric Dondarrion is back, flaming sword and all. For those who don’t remember, Beric was the leader of the Brotherhood Without Banners. They were the roving band of mercenaries in the Riverlands. A follower of the Lord of Light, and been resurrected by Thoros of Myr and Red God magic multiple times. Why he’s returned now is unknown, but he’s wearing thick and heavy furs. An indicator Beric has also gone beyond the Wall.
A shot of Jon and his men appear and in addition they are surrounded by a horde of Wildlings. On the right you can see a flaming sword being swung, so that’s almost certainly Beric, confirming he’s joined with Jon for whatever is going on beyond the Wall.
The Epic Battle to End All Battles?
The Unsullied open up a gate to let more Unsullied in. This could be them having snuck into Casterly Rock. Only time will tell. A pissed Jaime Lannister rides over the flaming remains of a battlefield. He looks pissed that his men have been killed by Drogon.
Hellfire rains down on ships as Yara and Theon look on in horror. This is also presumably where Yara is captured by Euron—in a montage of shots later on we see him fighting on one of these flame-strewn ships. No idea if that is accurate though.
Theon collapses on the shores of Dragonstone alone. This is presumably after Yara is captured. We also know Theon is there for another scene where he finally reunites with Jon Snow after years apart. That should be an epic throw-down on Theon by Jon, I cannot wait to see that happen.
The trailer ends with Jon cutting down a Wildling. More wildlings are present, and it takes place in front of that same rock we earlier. NO idea what is going on between them at all, but it appears ominous. Meanwhile, Sansa gets to do her own voice-over at the end, a sad verse about lone wolves. “When the snows fall, and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies… but the pack survives.” It could be a foreshadowing, about the remaining Stark kids, who are rumored to reunite this season.
