“Can you speak Bocce?”
If you are sitting down to watch the original Star Wars movie and your first question is not “Which format?” and then “Which version?” then you have not been a fan for as long as I have. When Star Wars: A New Hope came out, I was not the kind of kid who was focused enough to watch a movie in the theater. I’ll admit it – I had an attention span problem. That is why my first viewing was on VHS a year later. Then laserdisc, dvd, blu-ray and now streaming. And, I keep on watching.
“Stay on target. Stay on target.”
I don’t know what to say, I just like being with them on their adventures. From the minute we meet the droids, see Princess Leia store the plans in Artoo, and escape in the pod, I knew I’d follow them anywhere. I played with the action figures and took turns being the young jedi student and the handsome smuggler as often as I was the brave princess. I was a part of the resistance. A rebel.
“Only Imperial Storm Troopers are so precise.”
Have I mentioned how funny Star Wars is? The droids bicker like old lovers. I adore all the frustrated sounds R2 emits and C3P0 was my first exposure to a drama queen. But, some of my favorite lines happen from the rescue to the garbage chute. From “We’re all fine here now, thank you. How are you?” to “What an incredible smell you’ve discovered.”
“It surrounds us and penetrates us; it binds the galaxy together. “
In the story I didn’t understand how the Force worked, or how someone was born with it. But, I believed that everyone needs something like it. And for many of us, the Force existed in our world exactly as it was depicted in that galaxy far, far away.
“The Force will be with you, always.”
I never could have dreamed that Star Wars would be with me for my entire life so far. And, if the Force is with me, it’ll stay with me for the rest.
