Could X-Men & Fantastic Four be joining the Disney MCU?

Good Day to all the Geek Enthusiasts and Nerd Aficionados!

Typing up articles recently has eluded me, and I am glad to be back discussing the current news surrounding 21st Century Fox and Walt Disney Co. Speculation has been running rampant about Disney buying a large chunk of Fox. Now at this time these have just been talks. Official deals or paperwork are not in place. Why are these talks so important to pop culture and geekdom? If a deal is made on these talks, as a result we will have our merry mutants and comic books first family in their rightful cinematic universe. Yes, the Fantastic Four and X-Men would be part of Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Disney and Fox discuss

As reported on CNBC.com, Fox has been talking about selling most of their company to Disney. It appears this would be everything outside of Sports and Media. Making a Fox a massive streamlined news powerhouse, and giving Disney even more dominance over my childhood. These talks have been going on for the last few weeks. Basically just Fox dangling bait, and seeing what could come of it. On the business side of things it comes off as a win-win, as stated in the aforementioned CNBC article.

For Fox, the willingness to engage in sale talks with Disney stems from a growing belief among its senior management that scale in media is of immediate importance and there is not a path to gain that scale in entertainment through acquisition. The company is said to believe that a more tightly focused group of properties around news and sports could compete more effectively in the current marketplace.

For Disney, the opportunity to take control of another movie studio and significant TV production assets as it readies a direct-to-consumer entertainment streaming offering is attractive as is Fox’s significant exposure to international markets, such as the U.K., Germany and Italy — both through its networks and 39 percent ownership of Sky. Disney recently announced it will pull all of its movies from the Netflix platform and will establish two direct-to-consumer offerings: one for sports and one including its key franchises such as “Star Wars” and Marvel.

So Fox will be able to pull back and not try to do too much. This gives them the chance to be super successful at what can be managed. Disney on the other hand grows even more dominant. Giving them a fantastic launch point for the exclusive streaming service they are working on. We discussed this service previously. However, we know you’re not coming to Malice Corp for the business side of things. We are all about “All Things Nerd.”

The Impact on Nerdom

Fox has been dragging our favorite Marvel properties through the mud just to keep the film rights. More so on the Fantastic Four side then on the X-Men side. Every single film involving the first family of comics, that has spewed from Fox, has been terrible. Sure there are some wins, well one win in particular. Before becoming the star spangled patriot Captain America, Chris Evans did a great job as Johnny Storm. Other than that I’m almost more inclined to watch the Roger Corman’s unreleased Fantastic Four movie. If you’re someone that has watched it, then you know that’s saying a lot. We saw how great Spider-Man was once he was brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU.) Isn’t it about time the FF got a chance to be worth watching as well?

The X-Men side of things haven’t been treated as badly, although there have been some major steaming piles within that franchise of films. Namely Wolverine: Origins and X-Men 3 as the worst offenders. X3 was so bad that they erased it out of story existence in Days of Future Past. Fox showed it knows how to handle our merry mutants properly with Logan. Age of Apocalypse was a misstep that I hope the Dark Phoenix corrects. This is all without saying how fantastic The New Mutants looks as well. I am one of those people that is not as harsh on Fox for their mutant films, but once again there is a great impact this merger would hold for us nerds.

Weapon X and The Merc with a Mouth

Hugh Jackman has the record for playing the same character the most times in different films. He finished playing Wolverine with Logan. He left the door open to come back and play him again for one reason and one reason only. Despite Ryan Reynolds best efforts. Reprising the role for Deadpool 2 was not the reason. The only way he would come back as Wolverine was if he would be on the screen with The Avengers. Now he may have said this knowing it would be a fat chance of happening with the death grip that Fox holds on these characters.

Disney buying Fox movies division maybe the only way to see Wolverine on the screen again. Sure you could recast Wolverine like Fox has done with every other character that has appeared in the franchise. But at this point that would almost be sacrilege to have another actor portray him. It puts getting Wolverine chances of being in films between a rock and a hard place. If this deal were to become legit, as a result we could get more films with the Wolverine we have become accustomed to.

The final and greatest piece of the puzzle is Deadpool, that’s it just Deadpool. Deadpool being able to interact with the entire MCU would make a lot of nerds be able to die happy. Wade and Rocket arguing over who has the better arsenal. Having Wade introduce The Avengers to the magical taste of chimichangas from a food truck. Using Doctor Strange’s cape to play bullfighter with The Hulk as the bull. The possibilities for greatness are infinite.

The Simple Truth for the MCU

While this news of on again off again talks is exciting for getting the MCU together. It’s unfortunately probably just a nerd pipe dream for the time being. Even if both sides agreed to a deal. The result would make Disney too much of a powerhouse. Likely resulting in the deal being destroyed due to being considered a monopoly. For now we can dream, and hope that someway, somehow the Marvel brands find some way to all come together in the same silver screen universe.

Do you hope the talk stops, and a deal gets made? Would this be good for the fans? What other scenarios could you see Deadpool being part of? Let us know in the comments below.
