Dark Phoenix:

Casting and Directing News

What is the Movie all About?

So, there has been a lot of news dropped in the last 24 hours on the next installment of the X-men movie. Fox has officially formalized plans for Dark Phoenix, the next installment of the X-Men franchise. So far, Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), James McAvoy (Professor X), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Alexandra Shipp (Storm), Sophie Turner (Jean Grey), Tye Sheridan (Cyclops), and Kodi Smit-McPhee (Nightcrawler) are all locked in and set to reprise their roles. Also, Jessica Chastain is currently in talks with directors to play the Villain in the upcoming movie.

Simon Kinberg has been set as the director. The studio set a release date of  November 2, 2018. Simon was a writer of former X-men movies X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and X-Men: Apocalypse. Howeverhis will be his first time behind the camera as a director. Should we be worried he is a first time director? I say it’s time for some fresh blood. I look forward to seeing what he does. He appears to have a good knowledge of the comics and source material, if nothing else. Dark Phoenix will shoot in Montreal. In addition, Kinberg is also producing along with Hutch Parker and Lauren Shuler Donner.

What is the Movie All About?

“Dark Phoenix” centers on the telepathic Jean Grey, played by Turner. It focuses on the much-feared Phoenix force. The story originated in the 1976-77 comic book series Uncanny X-Men. Grey is exposed to deadly radiation after returning from a mission in space. Chastain would play Lilandra, who heads an alien empire called the Shi’ar. Jean Grey’s powers expanded to world-threatening heights thanks to the radiation. Jean and the Phoenix were eventually sentenced to destruction by the Shi’ar Empire which is an alien race with prior experience with Phoenix-cased havoc. Consequently, the X-Men will be fighting to save their teammate’s life.

I am hoping this movie redeems the Phoenix character. She is one of my favorite characters from the comics. I hated what X-Men: The Last Stand made her into. The Phoenix was introduced in X-Men 2, and became a major focus of the overall hated X-Men: Last Stand. Her character was depicted as an alternate personality within Jean Grey that Professor X had helped her to suppress. Then, Magneto manipulated Jean/Phoenix into supporting his anti-human cause. Eventually, Wolverine was forced to kill her to save lives. I could go on forever on why this was one of the lamest things I have ever seen, but I digress.

Regardless, this goes on my list of upcoming movies I have high expectations for. I am so excited to see this character brought to life. Hopefully, it will be done the right way this time around.
