Spoiler Alert: American Made (2017)
American Made is a 70’s trip to hell. Tom Cruise plays Barry Seal, a pilot who is offered a chance to work with the CIA. He is married (Sarah Wright) and has two kids. Monty Schafer (Domhnall Gleeson) offers Barry a job doing reconnaissance for the CIA in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras. Sounds like drug running, right? Well he Barry is so good at his job that Schafer promotes him to parcel service for General Manuel Noriega, (you know Panama’s generalissimo).
While he is on “Package Service”, Barry meets the members of the Medellin Cartel, (Pablo Escobar’s Gang). They trust him enough to ask him to run drugs to the US. However, during a raid, Barry gets arrested by the DEA. In comes Schafer again. He tells Barry that his family is in trouble, and when Barry is freed, he tells his wife to “bug out” with the kids. Of course, that makes her even more trusting of him – sarcasm implied.
So the family moves to Arkansas and again Barry is given a job carrying guns to the Contras. With his brand new airport and planes, Barry makes the run and is promptly mugged by the Contras for his stuff and NOT the guns. He gives the guns to the Cartel instead, and taking their drugs to the US.
The Plot Thickens……
Now the plot starts to become convoluted as Barry works for the CIA and the Cartel taking Contras to the US for Training, guns to the Cartel, and drugs to the US, while running from the DEA. He acquires a lot of wealth. The Contras are run out, Escobar wants war, and the CIA wants to get rid of Barry, badly. The FBI and the DEA catch up with Barry and he is arrested.
But Barry isn’t finished, he is let go. The government has another job for him getting evidence on the Sandinistas, and Barry is set up with cameras, again, because the government wants proof of drug running. However, while taking pictures of the whole operation, Barry is also photographed. Reagan’s White House uses the pictures, and Barry is again arrested by the DEA.
Barry is sent “up the river” and sentenced to 1000 hours of community service. His wife and kids move to Baton Rouge, and he is living in a hotel, several of them. Barry is killed one night by Escobar’s hitmen.
But that’s not the end. Schafer is given a promotion for getting the Iranians to arm the Contras. The CIA uses Barry’s plane to carry guns to the Contra’s. The whole thing was known as the Iran-Contra Affair. Barry’s wife, Lucy, is seen in the last shot working in a coffee shop and wearing the bracelet that Barry gave her.
Thus we are returned to the heaven that is the early 80’s and government scandal.
